In challenging off-road conditions, these trucks may encounter an unsettling front end shimmy. To rectify this issue, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) undertook a significant steering linkage redesign in mid-year 2008 (specifically from May 2008 onward).
To assess the steering damper attachment point, please follow these guidelines:
(1st Design): If the steering damper is affixed through a conical hole in the right-hand (RH) inner connecting tie rod, as it was originally installed, then no modifications have been made. You are permitted to install components intended for the 2003-2008 model years.
(2nd Design): If the steering damper is linked to the RH outer tie rod end via a bracket comprising two U-style bolts, this indicates that the steering components in the affected vehicle have been substituted with those from the 2009 model year.
These adjustments were introduced to enhance the vehicle’s performance and handling in rugged terrain, particularly beyond May 2008, making it crucial to identify the steering damper attachment method to determine the appropriate replacement parts. By distinguishing between the two designs, you can ensure that you acquire the compatible components and uphold the truck’s stability and safety during off-road ventures.
